An Indiana registered agent is an individual or company designated to receive legal notices on a company’s behalf. The agent is considered by state law to be a corporation’s “communications contact.”[1] Every corporation in Indiana must have a registered agent.[2]

Who can be a Registered Agent?
A registered agent can be a person, a general partnership, a domestic corporation, or a foreign corporation. A company may not serve as its own agent.
An agent can be either a commercial or a noncommercial agent. The only difference is that the state keeps a list of commercial agents for corporations to choose from, whereas a noncommercial agent is generally just a person used by a single corporation.
Both types of registered agents have the same responsibilities. When a registered agent has received a process, notice, or demand, the law considers the process, notice, or demand legally served.[3]
Can I be a Registered Agent?
Yes, if you are a person living in Indiana or a corporation registered in Indiana. The most common way for a corporation to select a registered agent is to include the agent’s name and address in the documents filed to form the entity.
