Who can be a Registered Agent?
A registered agent must be:
- Individual or business. An individual that is a resident of Alabama or a business entity registered to transact business in the State.
- Office in Alabama. A registered office located in Alabama that can be personally served and is not solely a mailbox or telephone answering service.[2]

Yes, the organizer of a business can be the registered agent if they are an Alabama resident and have an office located in the State that can accept personal service.

- Completing Form: Update to Alter Current Agent’s Info Form and make a copy (2 total)
- Attach Filing Fee: $100
- Send to: Secretary of State, Business Services, P.O. Box 5616, Montgomery, Alabama 36103. If payment is being made using the attached credit card authorization form, the filing can be sent to miscellaneous.filings@sos.alabama.gov.

Resigning as a Registered Agent
A registered agent can resign and step down from their duties as a registered agent by:
- Completing Form: Notice of Registered Agent Resignation Form and make a copy (2 total)
- Send to: Secretary of State, Business Services, P.O. Box 5616, Montgomery, Alabama 36103
There is no filing fee associated with resigning as a registered agent.[4]
